17: Photos - the Cyclades

After leaving the Saronic gulf, south of Athens, first stop was Kea in the Cyclades. They often built their main towns high up, away from pirates.

Lions are again a big feature in art here; this one was carved out of the native rock right here, about 2600 years ago.

The amazing network of ancient tracks are still in use today; friendly chap, gave us directions ... in Greek.

Brenda could not resist a litter pick!

Next stop, the workaday, busy, largest town of the Cylclades, Ermoupolis, on the Island of Syros. We liked it a lot ...

... we made some great, new, sailing friends there (Wolfgang, Klaus and Bettina) - one of quite a few late nights!

fixing the faulty windgenerator; best to stop it first, idiot!

Cylcadic art on show in the Ermoupolis museum. this is about 3000 years old, but strangely modern.

We'd been looking forward to Delos, the most important yet tiniest of islands in the Cylcades 2500 years ago. over 30000 people lived in this incredible city!

More lions! the numerous seaborn visitors must have been amazed as most would never have seen a lion before back then.

What a place to live this must have been!

A theatre for 5500 people, with grand villas surrounding it, with running water (!), fed from a vast cistern by the stage

Another museum and (at last!) a naked female nude form; Well, a nymph (I like the hand!).

Mykanos Island, may well be picture-post-card-Greece and jammed in the summer, but it's practically all closed down now. Not really yacht friendly.

Still, we made a friend, yet another feline! This kitten adopted us the moment we tied up! We fed it bean stew ... it left the beans.
