After Kalkan, we nipped into the tiny Greek Island of Kastellorizon ... to stock up on Ouzo. Kaş is dead opposite in the distance...
... before continuing our Lycian Odyssey
The day after we arrived in Kaş, it was Children’s day in Turkey ...
... And very colourful and impressive they were!
They paraded quite unconcerned straight past where we were moored for 4 days.
These girls and lads put on a great traditional dance show for the large crowd. It was all very well organised.
Next day was Pippa’s birthday! So we treated her to one of our own traditional ‘birthday breakfasts’ on board Deep Blue – including a cake baked by Brenda.
It was also market day ...
... Some good news over the phone!
On, at last to what I’d been really waiting for – Kekova roads.
This image, more than any other, had me hooked on visiting this region.
The view to the East from the small Genovese ruined fort...
This larger one towers over the thriving tourist village of Kale (Turkish for Castle) though the ancient Lycian tombs and ruins date back over 2500 years.
Opposite Kale are some sunken remains of a large Lycian settlement ...
... no diving allowed!
As promised, in the afternoon the wind got up enough so, AT LAST, I can go windsurfing!! (Ucagiz in background).
We walked west to find a delicious Badoit-like spring and ... camels?!
Next day we walked to Demre, the birthplace of the Bishop of Myra, beatified later as St. Nicholas ... ‘Noel Baba’, or Santa Claus to most of us.
It’s got a bit touristy around the Russian-prince-restored, Byzantine church of St. Nicholas.
But the ancient site of Myra, just to the north is brilliant!
The surrounding Lycian tombs were pretty ancient when the Romans watched gladiatorial combat in the adapted Greek theatre, which is pretty awe-inspiring.
Finally, in a stiff 30kts+ southwester and a rough sea we headed further east. A top sail! (10.8kts, surfing over the land is a new record!)
